AFP Deputy Commissioner and Chief Police Officer Neil Gaughan has announced he will soon retire after 40 years in policing.
AFP Assistant Commissioner Scott Lee will act as Chief Police Officer of the ACT until a substantive appointment to this role is made.
Additionally, in light of evolving operational priorities, Deputy Commissioner Ian McCartney will immediately move from the National Security portfolio to the Crime portfolio, and will share his time between Canberra and Eastern Command (NSW) to reflect emerging priorities in the role.
Deputy Commissioner Ian McCartney replaces Acting Deputy Commissioner Grant Nicholls, who will become the interim Executive Director of the Australian Institute of Police Management.
Assistant Commissioner Krissy Barrett will act as Deputy Commissioner for the National Security portfolio.
Announcements about permanent positions will be made at a later date.
AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw will make further statements about the career and dedication of Deputy Commissioner Gaughan in weeks ahead.
Deputy Commissioner Gaughan will remain working on AFP's bargaining process with members until his retirement in the coming weeks.
