Chewing Gum star to be Thirteenth Doctor on Doctor Who?

– Now that the current season 10 of “Doctor Who” will be the last time for Peter Capaldi to play the Twelfth Doctor, fans are wondering who will be taking the next Doctor role. A new report has suggested that Michaela Coel (“Chewing Gum”) is the potential Thirteenth Doctor, according to AceShowbiz.

Sources close to the production tell Nerdist News that Coel, who appeared on Netflix’s “Black Mirror”, is said to be the next Doctor on the long-running British series. Should Coel really take over the TARDIS, she will be the very first female as well as the first black Doctor.

The fact that Coel may play the Thirteenth doctor is certainly not outside of the realm of possibility. Fans have witnessed in the last few seasons of Steven Moffat’s “Doctor Who” that Time Lords and Time Ladies could swap roles regardless the gender and race. In the last season, fans also saw a Time Lord general went from a white male to a black female. We may actually see that regeneration again this time, considering that John Simm is coming back as the Master later this season.

Coel joins other names who were also rumored to be the next Doctor Who. The names of the potential Thirteenth Doctor include Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Natalie Dormer and Olivia Colman. Also rumored to be taking the job was Hollywood star Tilda Swinton.

However, in other news, The Sun reports that BBC rules out a potential female Doctor to replace Capaldi. According to the publication, BBC has assured an enraged father who is concerned that having a female Doctor may confuse his kids. After the father filed an official complaint to BBC, the network wrote back in a letter, saying that “there are currently no plans to have a female ‘Doctor Who’.”

Whether or not BBC will pick a female doctor for the next season remains to be seen. Either way, “Doctor Who” season 10 currently airs on Saturdays on BBC and BBC America.
