Edward River Council has reminded dog owners of their responsibilities to pick up after their pets in public places.
The reminder comes as Council steps up patrols to reduce the incidence of dog poo left behind in open spaces like footpaths, parks and sporting ovals.
Edward River Council's Mayor Cr Peta Betts said residents needed to keep their dogs under supervision at all times.
"Our public places are not a public toilet for dogs. Deniliquin's parks and ovals are recreation areas that are used by children and families, and it is not nice to have a close encounter with something smelly left behind by a dog.
"While we love our four-legged friends, they are not allowed to run around on our sporting grounds. The only place where dogs can be off-leash in public is in the off-leash dog park at Edward River Oval."
Cr Betts said the control of dogs in public places was governed by the Companion Animals Act 1998 and failure to comply could result in a fine.
"The Act says that dogs must be properly restrained while on walks, and under your control at all times. That control also extends to ensuring you take a bag along on your walks and scoop the poop when you need to.
"Besides avoiding a fine, it is just the considerate thing to do so everyone can enjoy our beautiful open spaces."
