Detectives from Major Collision Investigation Unit will investigate a fatal crash which occurred after a short pursuit in Ballan this afternoon, Victoria Police say.
Officers attempted to intercept an allegedly stolen vehicle on the Western Highway about 2.30pm.
The vehicle failed to stop and shortly after was involved in a crash with a truck near Ballan-Daylesford Road.
A female passenger from the allegedly stolen vehicle died at the scene.
Two men who were believed to be in the stolen vehicle fled the scene and police are still searching for them.
The Western Freeway is expected to be blocked for a number of hours while an investigation is conducted.
The deceased woman is yet to be identified.
An investigation into the incident has commenced and will be oversighted by Professional Standards Command as per normal procedure.
