Five UB-Affiliated Centers Earn Severo Ochoa Excellence Accolade

The 2023 call for accreditation of Severo Ochoa excellence centres and Maria de Maeztu excellence units has distinguished four centres linked to the University of Barcelona as Severo Ochoa excellence centres. These are the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute, the Ecological and Forestry Applications Research Centre (CREAF), the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). These centres will receive public funding of 5,660,000 euros.The Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute receives this distinction for the first time, which recognises its excellence, its national and international scientific impact and its capacity to attract talent. The accreditations will be valid for a period of six years.

​​​​​​​Other María de Maetzu and Severo Ochoa recognitions

Apart from the centres that have renewed their accreditations in this call, other institutes and centres belonging to or linked to the UB have received this recognition. Thus, the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (ICCUB), the Institute of Mathematics (IMUB), the Institute of Neurosciences (UBneuro), the Institute of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry (IQTCUB), the Institute for Nutrition and Food Safety Research (INSA-UB) and the Barcelona Institute of Analytic Philosophy (BIAP) have received the María de Maeztu accreditation of excellence. The Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG), in which the UB participates, also has the Severo Ochoa excellence accreditation.

The María de Maeztu units of excellence and the Severo Ochoa centres, distinctions promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, aim to promote the quality of scientific research at centres that stand out for the international relevance or impact of their research outcomes.
