Inquiries continue into fatal crash in Merrylands

Police are appealing for public assistance as inquiries continue into a fatal crash at Merrylands, NSW Police say.

Emergency services were called to Burnett Street about 1.45pm today, after two men were hit by a tipper truck.

It’s believed the Hino truck clipped a Hyundai Elantra before travelling into the yard of a home.

An 82-year-old man died at the scene, while a 75-year-old man was taken to Westmead Hospital where he remains in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

The truck driver, a 28-year-old Carlingford man, was taken to Westmead Hospital under police guard where he underwent mandatory blood and urine testing. He has since been released.

His passenger, an 18-year-old Merrylands man, attended hospital later in the evening where he was treated for back pain.

The 48-year-old Hyundai driver was not injured.

Officers from Holroyd Local Area Command established a crime scene and an investigation is underway by officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or the events leading up to it, to contact police.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
