Kava Seizure - Elcho Island

Northern Territory Police have seized a large quantity of kava destined a remote community in Arnhem Land.

On Tuesday 22 November 2023, Drug and Organised Crime Detectives conducted screening on cargo destined to be delivered to Galiwinku.

Drug Detection dogs Raffa and Faye were deployed and provided a conditioned response to specific boxes of cargo, revealing 122kgs of Kava.

A search of the offenders residential address, storage container and person revealed a further 171kgs of Kava, a small bag of cannabis, a small bag of cocaine and items indicative of supply.

A man has been charged with:

  • Supply Commercial Quantity of Kava
  • Possess Commercial Quantity of Kava
  • Possess less than traffickable quantity of Schedule 1 dangerous drug
  • Possess less than traffickable quantity of Schedule 2 dangerous drug

Constable First Class Mayne said "The supply and distributions of illegal substances into vulnerable communities are a catalyst for violence and neglect within family units.

"The ripple effect it has in the community can be nothing short of devastating."
