Man and teen charged following pursuit, firearm found in Lake Illawarra

Two people have been charged following a police pursuit in the state’s Illawarra region, NSW Police say.

Police attached to Lake Illawarra Target Action Group were patrolling the Berkley area about 10.30pm yesterday, when they observed a Holden travelling on Nannawilli Street.

Officers attempted to stop the driver for the purpose of a random breath test, however he allegedly failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated.

A short time later the driver lost control and crashed into a garden at the intersection of Tannery Street and the Princes Highway.

The male passenger was arrested, but the male driver fled on foot and was located and arrested shortly after with the assistance of the Police Dog Unit.

Police allegedly found a loaded revolver following a search of the vehicle.

The 29-year-old driver was charged with numerous weapons offences, police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, drive recklessly/furiously/manner dangerous and driver never licensed.

He was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Monday 16 October 2017.

The passenger, aged 16, was also charged in relation to a number of firearms offences.

He was refused bail and will appear in a Children’s Court on Wednesday 8 November 2017.
