Man arrested over siege in Newtown

A man has been arrested following a siege at Newtown today, NSW Police say.

About 9.15m today, police were called to a home on Church Street, following reports a man was inside the premises.

Officers from Newtown Local Area Command attended and located the man inside, who refused to come out.

The man climbed from a second storey balcony on to the roof and started to throw roof tiles and other material at the attending police, damaging a number of vehicles.

A significant number of police resources were called to the location including general duties, criminal investigation, proactive crime team, rescue unit, dog unit and negotiators.

Following a lengthy operation shortly before 5pm, police negotiators were able to affect the arrest of the man after he climbed from the roof.

A large amount of damage was occasioned to the building and surrounding premises that were struck by the tiles thrown from the roof.

The 38-year-old man was taken to Royal Prince Alfred for assessment.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
