Man charged following investigations into serious assault in Wollongong

A man has been charged over an alleged assault that left two men with serious facial injuries in Wollongong last week, NSW Police say.

About 3.30am on Sunday 13 August 2017, two men aged 28 and 36 were standing outside a store in the Crown Street mall when they were approached by a man.

A verbal altercation occurred before the man allegedly punched the 36-year-old several times in the face.

The 28-year-old man moved in to help his friend and he was also allegedly punched and kicked by the man who then left the area.

Both men were taken to hospital where they were treated for injuries to their faces including a fractured eye socket.

A crime scene was established at the time of the offence and an investigation was commenced by officers from Wollongong Local Area Command.

About 12.20am tomorrow, a 27-year-old man handed himself in to police at Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray.

He was given conditional bail and will appear in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 19 September 2017.
