Man in custody after officer assaulted in Sydney

A man remains in hospital after allegedly assaulting police in Sydney, NSW Police say.

Just after 10pm today, police attended the intersection of King and Castlereagh Streets, after a 37-year-old man allegedly became aggressive and refused to get out of a taxi.

A sergeant who attended was punched by the man several times, with a struggle occurring on the ground.

The officer was eventually able to bring the man under control.

During the arrest, the man struck his head on the ground causing a laceration. He has been taken to St Vincent’s Hospital where he remains under police guard.

The sergeant was treated on the scene for a soft tissue injury to his knee and a cut on his finger.

Upon release from hospital, it is anticipated the 37-year-old man will be taken to Day Street Police Station for charging.
