- Activation shows potential for new amenity along upgraded Armadale Train Line
A brand-new BMX pump track and mountain bike skills area, built underneath Tonkin Highway, has this morning been opened by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti.
The new facility sits alongside the Swan River under the widened Redcliffe Bridge, which was renamed the Mooro-Beeloo Bridge late last year.
The track has been delivered as part of the Tonkin Gap project, which is delivering major congestion-busting upgrades to Tonkin Hwy.
The new facilities can be accessed from a range of existing shared paths - including more than 3.1 kilometres of new shared path which was opened alongside Tonkin Hwy late last year.
The new facility also includes a new canoe landing area on the banks of the river, Aboriginal artwork, and native tree plantings.
The options and design for the underbridge area went through rigorous consultation with more than 700 community members and stakeholders providing input.
The feedback provided by the community and stakeholders showed a strong desire for the area to be converted into a family-friendly space.
To officially mark the opening of the new facilities, a community celebration will be held on April 14, with the entire community invited to attend.
The delivery of the new BMX pump track and mountain bike skills area highlights the opportunities that exist to deliver new public amenities as part of the METRONET Armadale Line upgrades.
More than six hectares of new public open space will be created as part of the Armadale Line upgrades, with plans for playgrounds, basketball courts, fitness areas, and other public amenities.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"This is an incredible new facility that takes an underutilised space and turns it into something the whole community can enjoy.
"Being able to deliver a new BMX pump track and mountain bike skills area shows what we can do with underutilised spaces when we put our minds to it.
"To commemorate the opening of this incredible new facility, we will be holding a community celebration on April 14, and we're encouraging families to jump on their bikes and come down to check out the new BMX track and mountain bike skills area.
"This facility also gives us a great snapshot of what we could deliver as part of the METRONET Armadale Line upgrade, with that project delivering six hectares of new public open space underneath the elevated rail."
