- Cook Government approves freehold land transfer to Nyangumarta Warrarn Aboriginal Corporation
- Land to support social and cultural opportunities for the Nyangumarta People
- Indigenous Land Use Agreement negotiations to commence to support transfer
The Cook Government has approved the divestment and transfer of eight hectares of Aboriginal Lands Trust (ALT) reserved land situated between Broome and Port Hedland for the benefit of the Nyangumarta People.
The land will be transferred in conditional freehold, with the protection of Native Title rights and interests, to the Nyangumarta Warrarn Aboriginal Corporation Registered Native Title Body Corporate (NWAC-RNTB).
Subject to the successful negotiation of an Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA), the land transfer will support social and cultural outcomes for the Nyangumarta People.
As stated by Lands Minister John Carey:
"The freehold land transfer will give NWAC-RNTBC secure tenure to open opportunities and improve social outcomes for the Nyangumarta People.
"The Cook Government continues to demonstrate its commitment to remove land tenure barriers to support Aboriginal-led outcomes and enterprises while protecting Native Title Rights."
As stated by Aboriginal Affairs Minister Dr Tony Buti:
"This Government's commitment to divest ALT land will support stronger and fairer opportunities for Aboriginal communities.
"Securing this land transfer will help strengthen social and cultural benefits for the Nyangumarta People."
