NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione was today joined by NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Troy Grant, and NSW Minister for Finance, Services and Property Dominic Perrottet, to launch an exciting new resource that allows the community to report crime online, NSW Police say.
The NSW Police Force Community Portal, which went live this morning today, gives the public the option to report lost property, intentional damage or graffiti and theft, via a secure, efficient and convenient website.
Use of the portal, which is linked to a MyServiceNSW account, also allows people who report non-urgent crime to make and receive updates and to be contacted directly by police if further information is required.
To use the portal, people simply create a MyServiceNSW account on the Service NSW website, or from the home page of the NSW Police Force Community Portal, to successfully complete a report.
Commissioner Scipione said the Community Portal would not replace the ability for people to report these types of crimes in person or on the phone, but will add another convenient online reporting tool.
"This resource is about recognising the changing needs of the community we serve and the ever-increasing role technology plays in their day-to-day lives," Commissioner Scipione said.
"The platform is easy to use – providing the user with step-by-step instructions – and can be accessed via a range of devices anywhere with an Internet connection.
"I can also assure those making a report that the information you provide is strictly confidential and is stored securely as you make your way through the reporting process.
"Lodging a report via the Community Portal can be completed in a matter of minutes, it’s incredibly efficient and you’ll be notified once your report has been received.
"The portal also facilitates two-way communication between officers, PoliceLink and the person reporting – so they can be kept informed should their report require further investigation," Commissioner Scipione said.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Police, Troy Grant, said this is a great use of technology to improve crime-fighting capacity and customer service.
"I congratulate the NSW Police Force and Service NSW on this collaboration, which means a new user can quickly register and complete an initial report from the privacy of their own home or from any place with Internet reception," Mr Grant said.
"This Government is committed to the use of innovation and technology to improve policing, including via our $100 million Policing for Tomorrow technology fund, to give our police the very best resources they need to serve the public."
NSW Minister for Finance Services and Property, Dominic Perrottet, said the launch of the Community Portal is another great reason for citizens to register a MyServiceNSW account – the NSW Government’s personalised one-stop portal for fast, convenient access to government services.
"This is a fantastic initiative allowing citizens to link their MyServiceNSW account to NSW Police and speed up the crime reporting process through a handy, secure online option," Mr Perrottet said.
"It’s a great example of how Service NSW is working with agencies across government to save you time and hassle, so if you don’t already have a MyServiceNSW account, now is a great time to register," he said.
The platform has been developed and implemented by the NSW Police Force Operational Policing Program, Business & Technology Services, PoliceLink and Service NSW.
