Officers jump on their bikes to raise funds for police legacy, NSW

A group of more than 100 NSW Police officers and friends will today embark on an annual charity bike ride to raise awareness and funds for NSW Police Legacy, NSW Police say.

Riders will set off for the three-day ride from The Domain in Sydney about 6am tomorrow.

The 2017 Police Legacy Remembrance Bicycle Ride will see the riders travel about 300km it total; with the 100km first leg south to Mittagong today.

Tomorrow (29 April 2017) will see the riders travel to the NSW Police Force Academy at Goulburn.

The final leg of the journey will involve the group leaving Goulburn and travelling to the National Police Memorial in Canberra on Sunday (30 April 2017) for a short remembrance service.

Superintendent Danny Sullivan, one of the event organisers and participants, said it’s a great way to raise awareness.

"We are riding to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and the families still suffering from loss and grief," Supt Sullivan said.

"This is the fifth year the ride has taken place and each year more people have jumped on board.

"Since 2013, we’ve been able to raise nearly $500,000.

"The support from the community has been overwhelming and we want to thank everyone who has contributed," Supt Sullivan said.

NSW Police Legacy supports more than 20,000 serving and retired police officers and their families during times of tragedy and need.
