Road Policing Command, with the assistance of Logan Police have concluded a two day traffic operation targeting drink and drug drivers on the Pacific Motorway, Springwood, Queensland Police say.
The operation is one of the largest static random breath and drug testing operations that police conduct every year in the Logan District. It forms part of Operation YORK targeting traffic offences throughout south-east Qld.
Operation York commenced on Friday November 25 and concluded on Sunday November 27 at 6am. While the main site was located on the Pacific Motorway at Springwood, there were also a number of smaller RBT and RDT sites in surrounding suburbs and on connecting arterial roads as well as the Logan Motorway. Police run the operation with the assistance of the Department of Transport and Main Roads, the Logan City Council and RACQ.
Police conducted 2287 breath tests, charging 25 people with drink driving. They also conducted 193 drug tests resulting in 26 drivers returning a positive result.
A total of 121 traffic infringement notices were issued mainly for seatbelt, mobile phone and defective type offences. 26 drivers were fined for type 2 offences such as driving unlicensed, disqualified, unregistered and / or uninsured vehicles.
On Friday a 74-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman were charged with drug related offences including drug possession after police intercepted the man’s vehicle at one of the smaller static sites. It will be alleged that 25 kilograms of cannabis was located in the vehicle at Loganlea. The pair are due to appear in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court at a later date.
Springwood Road Policing Officer in Charge Jim Lynam said the results are always concerning.
"Police are committed to the safety of all road users and while the RBT site on the Pacific Motorway is highly visible our message to the community is that police are out and about, anytime, anywhere. If you are doing the wrong thing you will be caught."
"We want to make sure all road users get to their destination safe and sound. Rest assured, police will be out in force with a visible presence on the roads, enforcing the road rules to keep everyone safe during the holiday season." Acting Senior Sergeant Lynam said.
