Tumut Police target shoplifting, NSW

Tumut General Duties Police have been running Operation Sleight of Hand in the Tumut area for the past three days.

The operation targeted shoplifting in the Tumut area focusing on repeat offenders and affected retailers.

Police in uniform and plain clothes saturated the CBD visiting retailers and interacting with suspected offenders at every opportunity.

The issues importance was highlighted by the Cootamundra Local Area Commander Chris Schilt personally taking part in the operation.

Police, NSW Police say;

  • Visited over 30 retailers stores offering support and crime prevention advice,
  • Issues banning notices to four shoplifting repeat offenders,
  • Charged one offender with various offences,
  • Issued three infringement / penalty notices and
  • Collected information on potential suspects in the Tumut area to create a local shoplifting data base for future operations.

The officer in charge of the operation, Senior Constable Todd Chapman, said that, "We take retail theft seriously and the impact this has on local businesses. We want to encourage information exchange between retailer and the police so we can take action against these pilferers.

If you want people banned from your stores tell us and we'll assist you. If you want it to stop tell your local cop!"

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers.
