Two charged after police officer assaulted in Newtown

Two men have been charged after a police officer was allegedly assaulted at Newtown last night, NSW Police say.

About 8.45pm today, police from Newtown Local Area Command were patrolling on King Street, when they heard banging on the rear of their vehicle.

The officers – a male constable and female leading senior constable – exited the vehicle and spoke to a 38-year-old man.

Police will allege the man assaulted the female officer, before both officers attempted to restrain him.

During the altercation, OC spray was deployed, and the female officer fell to the ground, hit her head and was knocked unconscious.

A bystander rendered assistance to the woman until NSW Ambulance Paramedics arrived and she was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

Additional police attended and arrested the 38-year-old man.

A second man, aged 47, was also arrested after he allegedly took police items including keys and a search glove.

Both men were taken to Newtown Police Station.

The 38-year-old man was charged with assault officer, resist arrest and larceny. He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court tomorrow.

The 47-year old man was issued a Field Court Attendance Notice for hindering police and is due to appear at Newtown Local Court on Thursday 20 October 2016.
