UK Government Issues Statement on Chile at UPR 46

Thank you, Mrs Vice-President and welcome to the impressive Chilean delegation.

We recognise Chile's commitment to human rights, in particular media freedom, and welcome their hosting of World Press Freedom Day in Santiago this week.

We welcome Chile's progress in implementing recommendations made in the wake of Chile's 2019 social unrest. We encourage further progress, including on policing reforms, ensuring accountability at all levels, and on measures that would strengthen the protection of minorities.

We have three recommendations:

  1. Through the regional Joint Follow-Up Mechanism accelerate efforts to implement recommendations that ensure law enforcement agencies follow the rule of law, prevent abusive practices, and improve the policing of protests.

  2. Strengthen efforts to protect the rights of LGBT+ people, taking further measures to reduce hate speech, violence and harassment.

  3. Ensure access to safe and legal abortion services, as provided by law.

I thank you.
