Nikki Corbishley was stunned to find every single egg in the box had two yolks inside the shell

A stunned mother from New Zealand couldn't believe her eyes when she defied one in a quintillion odds to crack open a dozen double-yolk eggs - from the same box.

Nikki Corbishley, a teacher at Wellington College prepared herself a meal with one of the eggs and discovered the strange phenomenon.

But she admitted that the idea that there could be any more double-yolks in the box had not crossed her mind.

Nikki told Stuff New Zealand: "I opened up the first one and I was like 'oh double yolks' and I didn't think anything of it.

But the next morning, as she prepared scrambled eggs for her 22-month-old son Thomas, she discovered another double yolker.

According to the British Egg Information Service, the chances of finding a double-yolk egg on average are one in 1,000.

Which means the probability of finding a dozen in the same box is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 - or one in a quintillion.

Nikki said her stunned friends and family members are now encouraging her to buy a lottery ticket after her amazing discovery.

The hens that laid the 12 double yolkers live in Whanganui, a city on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand.

The phenomenon is more likely when the eggs are laid by young hens whose hormone system has not yet fully developed, and the chicken produces two yolks in one go.

Ian Higgins, Chief Executive of Wholesome NZ, the company which distributes the eggs, said: "I've never heard of getting 12, but quite often people call us and say they get double yolkers in their jumbos.

"It's perfectly natural."

Nikki is has made a series of omelettes with some of her eggs, but has kept the remaining 6 in the fridge while she decides what to do with them.
