Woolworths takes down Anzac campaign website after backlash

Amid social media backlash Woolworths has taken down a controversial Anzac Day campaign website which allowed generating images branded with its logo and the words: "Lest We Forget Anzac 1915-2015. Fresh in our memories".

"The Fresh in Our Memories website has been taken down this evening. The site was developed to give our staff and customers a place to put their stories to mark the Centenary of ANZAC. We regret that our branding on the picture generator has caused offense, this was clearly never our intention," the supermarket giant said on its Facebook page.

Woolworths had hoped people would use the generated images as their social media profile pictures as the country prepare to mark the centenary of the Gallipoli landings on 25 April 1915.

According to the Protection of Word Anzac Act 1920, companies have to seek permission from the Department of Veterans Affairs before using the word Anzac in any marketing campaigns, or face a maximum fine of AUD 50 000.
