Youth arrested after off-duty officer intervenes in assault in Wollongong

A youth has been arrested after an off-duty police officer intervened in a domestic assault at a Wollongong bus stop today, NSW Police say.

The constable, who is attached to the Police Transport Command, was in Harbour Street, Wollongong, about midday today when he observed a teenage girl being punched.

The off-duty officer immediately intervened, taking hold of a 17-year-old boy before they became involved in a struggle on the footpath.

Uniformed police who were patrolling the area came across the pair, placing the teenager under arrest.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with common assault and intimidation.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at a childrens court on Tuesday 4 April 2017.
