Floating Islands Repaired: Bayside

The floating islands in Sir Joseph Banks Park pond that provide a safe nesting place for swan and turtles, have been removed for repairs.

Early last year Council partnered with Fix It Sisters Shed, WIRES and Western Sydney University in this pilot research project that was funded by NSW Ports.

This collaboration saw two prototype floating islands successfully launched in early 2023.

The islands, anchored in the middle of the pond, contained plants, logs and branches, creating a safe habit that led to native swans successfully nesting and breeding away from predators.

The floating islands have been damaged by the recent wet weather and Council has removed them to make some repairs and improvements to the initial design.

The upgraded islands are expected to be refloated in the coming weeks.
