Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, Governor of Tasmania, and Emeritus Professor Don Chalmers AO hosted a morning tea and a garden tour for volunteers and clients of the City of Hobart Still Gardening Program.
The event aims to celebrate the invaluable contributions of volunteers while raising awareness and enticing new volunteer applicants to join the program ahead of National Volunteer Week (20-26 May).
The Still Gardening Program, administered by the City of Hobart and funded through the Commonwealth Home Support Program, offers seniors the opportunity to remain active in their homes and gardens.
Through the dedicated efforts of volunteers, known as 'Garden Mates', seniors receive one-on-one assistance to pursue their passion for gardening and outdoor activities.
Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said: "The Still Gardening Program exemplifies our commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive community where seniors can continue to enjoy their hobbies and maintain their independence.
"We are immensely grateful for the dedication of our volunteers who selflessly devote their time and expertise to enriching the lives of others."
As the Patron of nearly 130 primarily volunteer organisations, Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC advocates for the importance of volunteering and community service.
Her involvement underscores the vital role of volunteers in enhancing the social fabric and resilience of Tasmania.
Cr Reynolds said volunteerism lies at the heart of Tasmania's culture, and Her Excellency's support serves as a beacon of encouragement for individuals to engage in meaningful community initiatives.
"We are honoured to have Her Excellency's support for this event, which not only recognises the invaluable contributions of our volunteers but also inspires others to join our efforts in creating a more vibrant and connected community," Cr Reynolds said.
The event provides an opportunity for Still Gardening 'Garden Mate' volunteers to access training workshops and engage in social connections with like-minded individuals.
By nurturing gardening skills and fostering social interactions, the program aims to enhance the well-being of both volunteers and clients alike.
