Media release

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne

Transport for NSW have sprung yet another unwelcome surprise on residents in Rozelle by scheduling the long-term closure of 6 major streets and the loss of more than 150 car parking spaces in Rozelle.

Hundreds of residents in Rozelle were informed yesterday by Transport for NSW that from June their streets would be closed, for months at a time, with all parking to be removed in those streets. This is to allow to for electrical cabling to be installed for the Western Harbour Tunnel.

See the full schedule of street closures and loss of parking below.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne has called on Transport Secretary Josh Murray and Coordinator General Howard Collins to come to Rozelle immediately to meet with residents affected by the proposed street closures.

"I'm calling on the Transport Secretary and the Coordinator General to get out of their ivory tower and actually come to Rozelle and meet with the residents whose lives will be massively disrupted by their decisions," Byrne said.

"Residents in Rozelle, Annandale, Lilyfield and Balmain have had a gutful of Transport for NSW arrogantly imposing unacceptable impacts for our community.

"The closure of so many streets adjoining the Rozelle Interchange and Victoria Road will lead to the return of the very worst traffic chaos experienced after the opening of the Interchange.

"The removal of more than 150 car parking spaces in such a small precinct will massively disrupt the lives of residents living there.

"Evans Street in Rozelle is the local road most people use to get out of the peninsula and onto Victoria Road. It's due to be closed for 46 days.

"Lamb Street in Lilyfield will be closed for 86 days meaning hundreds of local families may need to be relocated.

"Transport for NSW has conducted no consultation with the Council or the community about these mass street closures which is a continuation of their arrogant top-down approach that we've put up with for many years.

"We have sought an immediate explanation from Transport for NSW about why all these street closures must happen all at once, and what support will be put in place for residents who are forced out of their streets and their homes."
