Large parts of Iraq have been shaken by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake.

The quake struck about 100km from the city of As-Sulaymaniyah in the country’s northeast.

It was felt strongly in many areas, including the capital Baghdad.

Reuters said local media were reporting that eight villages in Iran have been damaged by the quake and several have lost electricity.

“Rescue teams have been dispatched to those areas,” local media report.

It is not yet known if there are any injuries.
