CFA Dandenong today joined the NAIDOC Week 2019 Children's Day held at Greaves Reserve. The local community were able to enjoy Aboriginal cultural displays, activities and dancing as part of the event.

CFA, SES, Victoria Police were also in attendance today, giving the kids an opportunity to learn about their roles within the community and to help build trust and awareness.

The kids were able to enjoy the trucks on display, learn about the tools our fireys use and also check out the ladder platform and rescue truck.

The event was hosted by the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency and the Dandenong & District Aborigines Co-operative.

Andrew Gardener, CEO of the Dandenong & District Aborigines Co-operative:

"The kids really loved seeing the trucks and the firefighters here today. These events are especially beneficial for our younger generation to build better relationships with emergency services personnel.

Our hope would be when they grow-up, they can see being a firefighter or a police officer as a career opportunity.

Aaron Felmingham, Firefighter from Dandenong said:

"We have a large Indigenous population here in Dandenong so it's important for us to get involved with events like this NAIDOC celebration to strengthen our connection with the community here today.

"These foundations ensure they understand our role but also give them an opportunity to learn how to keep themselves safe from fire."
