After almost 27 years caring for countless children, Marie Thornton is ready to pass the torch to the next generation of Family Day Care Educators.
With just a month left before she officially retires, Marie spent time sharing her experience and knowledge with Rachael Castle, who is in the process of becoming an Educator in 2020.
Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care is coordinated by Wagga Wagga City Council and has operated in the city since 1975.
Both Marie and Rachael agree that it's the relationships and one-on-one time with children that sets Family Day Care apart.
"Some of the children I first cared for are now teachers, builders, run their own business," Marie said.
"It's nice to think you had a hand in that; it's very rewarding.
"Because it's a small group you can spend time with everybody.
"You can see what the needs are because you're right there with them and you can focus on a child that might have special needs or requires more time to develop."
Rachael holds a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) and has worked at preschools, but is transitioning to operating her own Family Day Care service next year.
"I'm really passionate about developing good relationships with families and children," Rachael said.
"The ability to have less children and really develop those relationships is a great thing.
"It's very natural and replicates the home environment.
"It's been really great to see the way that Marie looks after the children in her care and she is a great inspiration.
"I look forward to doing it myself for the children of Wagga."
Both Marie and Rachael said there are many benefits to being an Educator – from running your own business to setting your own hours – but the biggest advantages is having the Family Day Care coordination unit just a phone call away.
"It's so wonderful to have someone you can just ring up at the office if you've got a question," Marie said.
"That's really the best thing about being an Educator – you've got support all the time."
"For me, the process in becoming an Educator has been really good," Rachael said.
"I can give them a call and check something and they let me know what I need to do to provide the best environment for the children."
The end of the year is a busy time at Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care coordination unit, working with families looking for care and Educators who may have spaces available in 2020.
"Council is always looking for new Educators to help grow the service and provide care for more families across the city," Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care Manager Kym Stewart said.
"Family Day Care allows you to work from home and build a successful business.
"Educators are provided with local resources, support and training through a partnership with Council's coordination unit.
"For families, our Educators provide a diverse range of care options, from weekdays to overnight care and so much more."
