Evade police incident in Applecross - man arrested

Around 2.25am this morning (19 February 2019), a Volkswagen Golf GTI was stolen from a home in Langford.

Police on patrol sighted the stolen vehicle about 3.40am travelling at speed along South Street in Murdoch. Emergency lights and siren were activated on the police vehicle but the driver failed to stop.

Police followed the vehicle and it is alleged near South Street and Stock Road in O'Connor a female passenger fled the stolen car before the vehicle continued to evade police through the suburbs of Palmyra, Melville, Bicton, East Fremantle, Attadale, Alfred Cove and Applecross.

Police aborted the pursuit on Canning Highway in Applecross and whilst patrols were being conducted looking for the stolen Volkswagen Golf, police received a call stating the vehicle has struck a tree on Collier Street in Applecross.

Police attended the location and began a search for the driver of the vehicle who was allegedly sighted on the rooftop of a property on Matheson Road. The male driver was located hiding in a rubbish skip bin behind a nearby commercial property.

A 21-year-old man from Mount Nasura has been charged with:-

• Aggravated Burglary and Commit Offence (Dwelling);

• Stealing;

• Steal Motor Vehicle;

• No Authority to Drive (Suspended);

• Driver of a Vehicle Failed to Comply with a Direction to Stop (circumstance of aggravation); and

• Reckless Driving to Escape Pursuit by Police.

He is due to appear before the Fremantle Magistrates Court today, 19 February 2019.
