A Landcare group in the Upper Murray is kick-starting bushfire recovery in the Holbrook region to not only support wildlife habitat regeneration – but also help the community get back on its feet.
After the area was devastated by the Green Valley and Dunns Road infernos in January, Holbrook Landcare and their member group Mountain Landcare will launch a range of activities on public and private land.
With funding from Landcare Australia's $300,000 Bushfire Recovery Grants, projects include paddock tree replacement, installation of donated nest boxes, shelter belt understorey regeneration and the installation of wildlife cameras.
And the group want the whole community to get involved.
"The activities will boost individual morale for the community because they are doing something worthwhile," explained Kylie Durant, Project Manager with Holbrook Landcare.
"Through shared activities, we'll be raising awareness of wildlife habitat restoration and local community group action, provide essential data to inform future project design and priority planning and provide food and shelter for wildlife."
There will be a public forum to engage agencies and public with environmental fire recovery programs with aims to include community in the programs and share initial results of monitoring and volunteering.
Made possible due to the extraordinary volume of donations from generous organisations and private donors, the Landcare Australia Bushfire Recovery Grants will support 23 wide-ranging regeneration projects focusing on activities including impacted rainforest revegetation, nest boxes for decimated native species and feeding programs for endangered wildlife.
Key issues for all the grant recipients include restoring essential wildlife habitat, management of invasive weeds, erosion control and protection of our waterways and aquatic habitat.
The funding came from generous donations during the bushfires from across the country and around the world, including Landcare Australia partners Brambles CHEP, Bushman's Tanks, Bloom Aid and Hawkes Brewing.
