The US Geological Survey is reporting that a 6.9-magnitude earthquake has hit off the coast of the Papua New Guinea island of New Britain.
The quake’s epicentre was 156 kilometres south-south-west of Kokopo in East New Britain province.
It was in the same area as last week’s 6.6-magnitude quake.
The USGS reports that tsunami waves of up to one metre are possible for coastal areas of PNG and up to 30 centimetres for coastal areas of the Solomon Islands.
PNG’s Highlands was hit by a 7.5-magnitude quake last month which left least 125 dead and around 270,000 people are still estimated to be in urgent need of aid. /radionz
