Man airlifted to hospital following assault in Tamworth

A man has been airlifted to Sydney with head injuries after an alleged assault at South Tamworth this morning, NSW Police say.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Robert Street and Woodward Avenue about 4.45am today, in response to a Triple Zero (000) call.

Police from Oxley Local Area Command arrived to find a 49-year-old man with serious head injuries; he was treated at the scene before being taken to Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital.

The man has now been flown by Westpac Rescue Helicopter to John Hunter Hospital. His condition is stable.

A 23-year-old man, from Westdale, was arrested at the scene and taken to Tamworth Police Station.

He is assisting detectives with their inquiries.
