Man charged after a house fire in Wollongong

Police have charged a man after a house fire south of Sydney overnight, NSW Police say.

About 12.50am today, emergency services were called to a home in Jutland Avenue, Wollongong, following reports of a house fire.

A number of nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution as officers from Fire & Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze.

No one was injured during the incident.

Following investigations, officers from Wollongong Local Area Command arrested a 74-year-old man nearby.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with malicious damage by fire.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday 31 August 2016.
