Sexual Assault charges laid against military member in Halifax, N.S.

November 14, 2018 – Ottawa – National Defence/Canadian Armed Forces

On November 10, 2018, the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service (CFNIS) charged a member of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) with multiple sexual assault-related offences under the National Defence Act (NDA) and Criminal Code of Canada (CCC).

The charges relate to reported incidents during Fall and Winter 2017 involving other members of the CAF while deployed at sea onboard the HMCS Charlottetown.

Navy Sub-Lieutenant Aidan Louise BROWNLEE, a Regular Force member of HMCS Toronto which homeport is Halifax, N.S. faces the following charges:

  • Three (3) counts of Sexual Assault under section 271 of the CCC, punishable under section 130 of the NDA;
  • One (1) count of Assault under section 266 of the CCC, punishable under section 130 of the NDA;
  • Three (3) counts of Behaving in disgraceful manner contrary to section 93 of the NDA.

The matter is now proceeding in accordance with the military justice system for possible court martial at a date and location still to be determined.
