Wollongong City Council apologizes over laser light show disappointment

Wollongong City Council’s Australia Day event was planned to feature a laser light show as a finale for the annual event that attracts as many as 20,000 people to the Belmore Basin area.

The Council had replaced the usual Australia Day fireworks with a lights show this year due to the ongoing bushfire emergency.

However, the show scheduled for 9pm was first delayed and then a short session of light effects was presented to wrap up the Australia Day celebrations.

The Council later blamed electrical system water leak for the glitch.

“And that’s a wrap! Thanks to all those who came along and helped celebrate Australia Day in the Gong. Here are some highlights of a great day in which the spirit of our community was on full display. The 9pm light show did not go as planned. Water entered some of the electrical connections during the afternoon storms, which affected the quality of the show. To all those who were looking forward to the show, we’re sorry it did not meet expectations and we share your disappointment.”
