Department staff in delegation to INC-4

We recently represented Australia at the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC-4).

Held in Ottawa, Canada from 23 to 29 April 2024, INC-4 is the fourth of 5 scheduled sessions to decide on an international approach to plastic pollution.

The negotiating committee is working to develop an international legally binding policy. This policy will address the full life cycle of plastic, and include a focus on reducing plastic pollution in our marine environments.

INC-4 saw the progress of draft text for the policy. This is a crucial outcome ahead of INC-5 later this year which will be held in Busan, Republic of Korea. It is expected that the policy will be finalised at INC-5.

Discussions at INC-4 also focussed on:

  • plastic emissions
  • plastic production
  • plastic product design
  • waste management
  • problematic and avoidable plastics.

Through strong environmental leadership, Australia is working hard to address all facets of the triple planetary crisis - climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss.

We will continue to share our technical expertise abroad to protect more of what's precious, restore more of what's damaged, and manage nature for the future.
