Major Brighton Road Transport Infrastructure Revamp in Port Phillip

City of Port Phillip
Road closures will affect access to St Kilda Town Hall, Bubup Nairm Children's Centre and St Kilda Library

This project is being run by Yarra Trams. For the most up to date information on the stages of this project, please visit the Yarra Trams website.

Yarra Trams are undertaking critical renewal of the tram tracks on St Kilda Road/Brighton Road.

At 9 pm on Friday 3 May, Stage 2 of this project will commence, which includes upgrading the tracks between Inkerman Street and Carlisle Street. This will last for approximately two weeks.

During this period, St Kilda Road/Brighton Road (between Inkerman Street and Carlisle Street) will reduce to one lane in each direction on most weekdays and be completely closed on other days. The result of this closure will have significant flow-on impacts to traffic and parking in the surrounding areas.

This second stage will also include a partial closure of Carlisle Street between St Kilda Road and Chapel Street, directly impacting services located at St Kilda Town Hall, Bubup Nairm Children's Centre and St Kilda Library.

No through traffic will be permitted on this section of Carlisle Street, and all on-street car parking will be temporarily removed for the entire two week period. Carlisle Street will remain open for pedestrians.

There will be limited local access into Carlisle Street for vehicles accessing St Kilda Town Hall's underground car park only for:

  • Customers accessing St Kilda Town Hall services (including ASSIST counter)
  • Bubup Nairm pick up/drop offs
  • Vehicles that are essential for Council officers to undertake offsite work.

Other impacts of these road closures will be:

  • Increased traffic volumes on Glen Huntly Road, Glen Eira Road, Byron Street, Chapel Street, Inkerman Street, and other local streets while detours are in place.
  • Pedestrian access across St Kilda Road/Brighton Road will be heavily restricted, with no controlled pedestrian crossing of this highway between Inkerman Street and St Kilda Primary School (near Dickens Street). This means there will be no direct pedestrian access across the St Kilda Road/Carlisle Street intersection.
  • Tram routes 3, 16, and 67 will be partially suspended and replaced with bus services. If you plan to visit the precinct, consider taking the train to/from Balaclava Station, which will be unaffected.
