Street Upgrades Near Waurn Ponds Station Complete

A $2.1 million upgrade of Sugargum Drive and Bodega Street in Waurn Ponds is complete, creating improved conditions for road users and pedestrians near Waurn Ponds Station.

Fully funded via the Australian Government's Roads to Recovery program, the project has produced a range of improvements between Oakwood Crescent and Rossack Drive.

Works included road pavement rehabilitation, kerb and channel upgrades, reflective pavement markers and line marking upgrades.

The project was completed on time and six weeks ahead of schedule by the City of Greater Geelong's design, program delivery and construction teams.

The upgrades came in response to increasing traffic in the area, with around 11,000 vehicles now travelling along Sugargum Drive and Bodega Street each day.

Upwards of 15 per cent of these are heavy vehicles such as trucks.

Federal Member for Corangamite Libby Coker MP:

We know that better infrastructure builds stronger communities and improves safety, and that's why this upgrade – right in front of the Waurn Ponds Train Station – is so important for our growing region.

There has been a significant increase in traffic on this road, and the upgrade will go a long way to ensuring infrastructure is now up to the task for those accessing the train station.

I thank the City of Greater Geelong for working closely with us to ensure the delivery of this project.

Mayor Trent Sullivan:

The Roads to Recovery program is helping the Council meet the demand for road upgrades.

We invest heavily in maintaining and improving our local roads, but as Geelong continues to grow, the assistance of the federal government for projects like this one makes a huge difference.

With Waurn Ponds Station now so heavily used, this project was definitely needed and we are happy it's now complete.
