Tweed Heads is set for a facelift with a $1.9 million investment to revitalise the CBD after Tweed Shire Council was today named as one of the successful recipients of funding through the NSW Department of Primary Industry & Regional Development.
This grant funding of $1.5 million and Council's co-contribution of $400,000 are part of the Regional Economic Development & Community Investment Program which was announced by Minister for Regional NSW, Tara Moriarty and Minister for Recovery, Small Business and the North Coast, Janelle Saffin.
Tweed Shire Council's submission, the Border Bleak to Border Beautiful Project, will revitalise and update the Tweed Heads entry with a focus on Wharf St, Bay Street and Jack Evans Boat Harbour. It will deliver a safer and more attractive centre and will support the local economy by attracting and retaining visitors, residents and new businesses.
Tweed Shire Council General Manager Troy Green explained that Council is looking forwarding to this significant investment and improving the area in collaboration with the Tweed Heads Business Chamber.
"The timing for this excellent initiative, ahead of preparations for Brisbane Olympics 2032 and the $900m Tweed Mall development, is a great example of 'right time, right place," Mr Green said.
"This revitalisation will boost community infrastructure, enhance community safety and spread colour and vibrancy to celebrate the NSW Gateway."
"We also want to acknowledge Colin Usher, Chair of the Tweed Heads Business Chamber and its members who have worked hand-in-glove with us to ensure this great result," he said.
This project will kick start the revitalisation of Wharf Street and Bay Street from the Border Marker to Boyds Bay Bridge by delivering:
1. Street Scaping and Infrastructure: cleaning, replacement and upgrades of aging and unsafe infrastructure including streetscape furniture, bollards, screens, seating and bins to provide clean and well serviced community infrastructure throughout.
2. Wayfinding, Traffic Signage and Safety: assist with traffic and visitation flow across our seamless border. Extending signage and wayfaring across Wharf and Bay Streets to help navigate and integrate around the Tweed Heads CBD and between our border communities.
3. Placemaking and Beautification initiatives: including large scale wall murals, 'always on' and seasonal signage and banners, street and pavement art, tree wrapping, uplighting and projection enhancements to create glimmer and boost the nighttime economy.
4. EOI and Activation of Business Precinct: Kick-start the local nighttime economy through re-purposing and site fit out incentives for the former border tourism visitor information centre. The project will call for expressions of interest to activate a currently vacant prime location space for a new commercial enterprise.
Planning is already underway for this exciting project with the first of the physical works to be delivered in 2026.
