$1 million in Midweek Melbourne Money eaten up

Victorians have gobbled up $1 million in money back on meals in the city, in the first week of a scheme aimed at bringing people into the CBD and surrounds during the week.

The $5 million Midweek Melbourne Money scheme is being offered from Monday to Thursday until funds are exhausted. Diners can claim 30 per cent back from their meals by uploading a receipt online.

The scheme is expected to pick up steam from Monday, as the requirement to wear masks in the office lifts and after-work meals make a comeback.

The scheme applies to all restaurants, cafes and bars where meals are served across the municipality.

Midweek Melbourne Money is being offered through the $200 million Melbourne City Revitalisation Fund - a joint partnership between the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government.

Attributable to Lord Mayor Sally Capp

"Diners have gobbled up Midweek Melbourne Money, with $1 million in successful rebates already processed by Thursday morning, after the scheme launched on Monday.

"We knew there was an appetite to support city traders, but this response proves Melbourne's appetite is insatiable.

"Now that density limits have been removed, we're seeing a real sense of FOMO as people are rushing to book a midweek meal before the remaining $4 million runs out."

Attributable to City Activation Portfolio Lead Councillor Roshena Campbell

"Melbourne Money has always been popular, but the uptake of the midweek version has been staggering, with approximately 34,000 claims made to date," Cr Campbell said.

"This represents $3.3 million that has poured into hospitality businesses this week."
