100 ways to do more with your life

Victorians who think they may benefit from changing the role gambling plays in their life are encouraged to take up the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation’s 100 Day Challenge, released today.

Ideal for anyone who wants to take a break from, or cut down on the amount of time and money they spend on gambling, the 100 Day Challenge offers participants 100 alternative activities over 100 days.

"The abundant range of online gambling options, including through apps, along with the widespread use of smartphones mean that any adult almost anywhere across the state can gamble at any time of the day or night," Foundation CEO Louise Glanville said.

"This, along with its normalisation through prolific advertising and sponsorship, for example, has seen the turnover from sport-related gambling in Victoria increase significantly over the past decade and put young men, especially, at greater risk of experiencing gambling harm.

"The 100 Day Challenge is about encouraging people to consider how gambling fits into their current routine and reminding them in a way that is engaging and positive, of the importance of a balanced lifestyle."

Ms Glanville said the program had been designed with the assistance of experts in therapeutic services to provide practical, effective support to people wanting to change their relationship with gambling.

"Whether a person just needs to take a break or wants to quit gambling permanently, the 100 Day Challenge offers participants an opportunity to reflect on their gambling activities and behaviours, rekindle their interest in forgotten hobbies or try something new," she said.

100 Day Challenge activities cover a range of themes – wellness, solitary, practical, physical, creative and social – and an online community allows participants to share their experiences, feelings, goals and successes, and to encourage and inspire each other.

Other features include tips and advice for managing finances and building a support team, and information about how to access professional support, if needed.
