More than 100 Hills Shire residents proudly marked Australia Day by officially becoming Australian citizens at a special citizenship ceremony held at The Hills Shire Council Chambers on Monday, January 26.
The ceremony welcomed 110 new citizens from 22 countries, reflecting the Shire's rich cultural diversity and forming part of hundreds of citizenship ceremonies held across the nation to celebrate Australia Day.
Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne, presided over the ceremony and warmly welcomed the newest members of the Hills community.
"It's an honour to welcome 110 new citizens to The Hills Shire, each of whom adds to the rich and diverse character of our community," Mayor Byrne said.
"One of our greatest strengths is our multiculturalism. Our new citizens bring with them a wealth of experiences and perspectives that help shape the wonderful story of life here in The Hills.
"Australia Day gives us all an opportunity to reflect on how fortunate we are to call this country home, and there is no better day to take the pledge of citizenship."
This year's new citizens represented a wide range of cultural backgrounds, including people from New Zealand, South Africa, Iran, Myanmar and India.
Among those taking the pledge was the Bedge family from Baulkham Hills.
Indian-born Rahul Bedge, who moved to Australia in 2020, became a citizen alongside his wife Sonali and children Anish and Ananya.
"Becoming Australian citizens today [January 26] is incredibly meaningful for our family," Mr Bedge said.
"Australia has given us a strong sense of opportunity, safety and belonging, and we're proud to now call this country home.
"Sharing this moment together on Australia Day is something we will always remember."
