$20,000 grant brings Junior State Cup North back to Townsville

The 2022 Junior State Cup North will take over the Townsville Touch Association fields and Townsville Sports Reserve for a three-day tournament thanks to a $20,000 Townsville City Council grant.

This is the second year the JSCN tournament has been held to provide the opportunity for junior touch football players from across the state to compete in an inclusive, fun and safe environment.

Mayor Jenny Hill said the event was not only beneficial for the participants but also for the region.

"Events like the Junior State Cup North are mutually beneficial for the players, coaches, referees and other participants who get the experience of competing for the cup, as well as for the host city which gets a tourism and hospitality boost from visiting players and supporters," Cr Hill said.

"JSCN proved itself to be a hugely successful event last year and this year will be no different – the North Queensland Touch Association is forecasting 1,850 participants and 3,400 attendees for the three-day tournament. This will be a huge turnout and a valuable injection into Townsville businesses."

Cr Hill said it was great to see Council support initiatives that focused on health and fitness.

"Organised sport is a prime way to stay fit and healthy for people of all ages and it's great to see Townsville become a hub for events like JSCN," she said.

"This event will not only give the competing athletes a platform, but it will also engage coaches, referees, officials, the players' families and the Townsville community to get involved and stay active."

The 2022 Junior State Cup North will run from 2 April to 4 April 2022 at the Townsville Touch Association fields and Townsville Sports Reserve.
