$4.75 million of improvements to start on Main Arm Road

Major roadworks on Main Arm Road are due to start on 12 September 2022.

Council has received $3.45 million in grant funding from Transport for NSW to improve safety for people travelling on Main Arm Road, especially the section from Mullumbimby to Sherrys Bridge.

Additional funding of $1.3 million from the NSW Government will allow for reconstruction work on the one-kilometre section of Main Arm Road, west of Sherrys Bridge. This work will commence early in 2023, weather permitting.

Around 3,000 vehicles travel on Main Arm Road every day and some sections are in poor condition.

Malcolm Robertson, Acting Director Infrastructure Services, said the combined work will significantly improve Main Arm Road, making it safer for everyone, especially those who travel on that road regularly.

"We will also be widening the road in some sections, installing guardrails and upgrading the intersection at Coolamon Scenic Drive, Pine Avenue and Chinbible Avenue," Mr Robertson said.

"Locals are very aware of how flood-prone the section near Sherrys Bridge is and we're really pleased to have the grant funding from the NSW Government that will allow for a section of the road to be raised to make it less susceptible to nuisance flooding – and that we can schedule that work to get done early next year," Mr Robertson said.

Flood recovery work will also start in the coming months and this includes repairing flood damaged parts of Upper Main Arm Rd.

From mid-September until early 2023 people travelling on Main Arm Road can expect delays.

"We will be doing everything we can to be keeping these delays to a minimum but unfortunately they are unavoidable when working on a narrow, rural road," he said.

"We will have signage in place before we start to give people prior warning of the roads works."
