Officers ‘nabbed’ 54 drivers driving under the influence of alcohol, 35 people not wearing seatbelts, and five unlicensed drivers, during a two-night blitz in Sydney’s west, NSW Police say.
Operation Nabbed was conducted over the weekend (Friday 20 October and Saturday 21 October 2017).
The operation involved police performing high-visibility Random Breath Testing on the M2 and M7 off-ramps between Artarmon and Kings Park, as well as the Gore Hill Freeway and Lane Cove Tunnel.
Over the two days of the operation:
- Police conducted nearly 10,000 breath tests,
- 54 motorists were charged with drink-driving offences,
- 21 unregistered vehicles were detected,
- Five drivers were caught driving unlicensed,
- 368 infringement notices were issued for a variety of offences, including;
- 35 people detected not wearing a seatbelt (six of which were unrestrained children).
The Commander of the NSW Police Force’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy, is frustrated at the selfishness of drivers who were nabbed.
"By taking the wheel when you’re under the influence of alcohol, you’re not only putting your life in immediate danger, you could kill an innocent road-user.
"Not only did we catch 54 drivers drunk at the wheel, we also caught 35 drivers or passengers not wearing seatbelts, including six unrestrained children.
"It is baffling to see so many drivers choosing to put their own life at risk, but it is unforgivable to risk the life of young passengers and other road users.
"Operations like this will continue until we can ensure that lives are no longer put at risk on our roads," Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.
