Each year in the life of a person aged 100 years or older is a true milestone to be celebrated in style.
Yet the usual celebration at City of Boroondara - a centenarians' luncheon during the annual Seniors Festival - was off the table this year due to COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings.
So instead, high tea packages were hand-delivered to 55 centenarians to enjoy at home - a gesture of gratitude and recognition for their contributions to the community.
Our community bus drivers, who normally provide daily transport for our eligible residents, hand-delivered the packages, containing a high tea for two, a Boroondara Seniors Festival DVD and a bunch of roses.
Ashburton resident and centenarian, Ida Johnson, was thrilled to receive her high tea package, according to her son, David Johnson.
"Thank you so much for sending my mother the 'high tea package'," David said.
"She was so thrilled. At 102 years of age, it has been a struggle in aged care. This gift really highlighted her day and it was nice that it arrived when my wife and I were visiting her."
Boroondara Mayor, Cr Garry Thompson, said the packages were a small but meaningful way to acknowledge the wonderful contributions of our most senior residents.
"City of Boroondara is proud of our centenarians and the contributions they have made to the tapestry of our community. They have lived through their share of joys, trials and tribulations and continue to inspire us with their resilience and positive attitude to life," Cr Thompson said.
"A special thank you to our community bus drivers, for helping to make our centenarians' days by delivering the packages."
