Activists use virtual reality for social change

Using Virtual Reality for Social Change

21/2/2018

In a world first, three Australian companies are partnering to create a virtual reality experience of a 5-day festival. Except it’s not really a festival…

Newkind 2.0 is programmed with lectures, workshops, and skill development sessions to empower more effective activism and inspire efforts for social change.

The organisers of Newkind have partnered with Ignition Immersive and Metavents, two companies on the leading edge of immersive experience design, to create a virtual reality experience for a global audience.

Participants from around the world will be able to use a VR headset to experience the event as if they were actually there, as well as revisit the event as many times as they like.

Newkind is more a capacity building exercise than it is a festival and event organisers want to use the power of virtual reality to share the activism training experience with as many people as possible.

Event Director, Erfan Daliri says "The world is in strife and it is our intention to inspire as many young people as possible to take more active roles in the rebalancing of society."

The VR world crafted by Metavents based on the actual location of the event will be filled with the 360 content captured by Ignition Immersive and with a VR headset anyone can navigate the space and experience the lectures and workshops as if they were really there.

The annual gathering is held from the 21st to 25th of March in an undisclosed location in Tasmania. Attendees are chartered from the airport to the site, for 5 days of inspirational talks, practical workshops and discussion panels.
