Admitting You Don't Know Boosts Performance

The Power of Visibility/eckfactor

When it comes to successful leadership, admitting that you don't know can give you access to a raft of new solutions and ideas that otherwise lie dormant within your team, says Australian leadership expert Margot Faraci.

Margot is available to discuss her keynote topic BOSS YOU'RE WRONG, exploring how to create healthy debate in your teams.

"Once you choose the right people, the single biggest predictor of performance is psychological safety in your team. Leaders create that by encouraging disagreement, debate and challenge, going hard on the issue and soft on the person who is debating with you," says Ms Faraci.

"This is important right now: with a looming global recession, the collapse of a bank in the US and burgeoning staff layoffs across all sectors, leaders are grappling with urgency and incomplete information in high-pressure situations. All they have is their judgement. Who will realise that their leadership is neither infallible nor infinitely scalable? Who will have the courage to ask their teams for debate? Those who do, will do best."

Margot says that while every leader has to say they invite their team to challenge them, not many actually encourage that. They are the leaders who miss out on the solutions and ideas that are sitting within their team.

While the buck always stops with the boss, a decision is always of higher quality "when the team panel-beats it."

MARGOT FARACI'S CURRENT TALK TOPICS

Love Leadership. What is it and why do we need to talk about it? There are two ways to lead: with fear or with love. When you lead from fear, you create small, anxious, reactive teams so that nothing improves. When you lead from love, you create powerful, high-performance teams where possibilities expand.

Gifts From the Enemy. If you lead well, you'll end up creating enemies. This is confronting, but the loyal forces of the opposition can teach us a lot. What are the gifts of enemies and how can they lift our leadership capability?

Toxic High Performers, Nice Under Performers, and Your Delusions. The top three traps for leaders are all avoidable, so why do we all fall into them? And how can we avoid them so that our people, markets, and results flourish?

Boss, You're Wrong. Every leader has to say they invite their team to challenge them. But not many actually encourage that, and they miss out on the solutions and ideas that are sitting within their team. How do you overcome your own resistance to being told you're wrong and get the best outcomes?
