As the festive season approaches, Rockhampton Regional Council is encouraging residents to think about adoption when considering a pet as a Christmas gift.
Planning and Regulation Councillor Grant Mathers said by adopting a pet, it provides the chance to spread the love to some deserving furry friends at Christmas.
"Welcoming a pet into your family at Christmas is a big decision, and we're asking people to consider adoption as their first choice," Cr Mathers said.
"Buying a puppy is appealing, but adoption offers something far more meaningful.
"It gives animals in our Animal Management Centre and local rescue shelters a second chance at life, love, and security."
Cr Mathers reminded residents that adoption also comes with lifelong commitment and responsibility.
"A pet is not just for a couple of hours of fun at Christmas-it's a gift that lasts well beyond the holiday season," Cr Mathers said.
"Families should ask themselves if they can provide long‑term care, whether the pet suits their lifestyle, and if they're ready to meet the needs of their new companion."
The festive period is one of the busiest times for rescue shelters, with RSPCA Queensland spokesperson Emma Lagoon confirming that the rise in surrenders has become a recurring annual trend.
"If you're home for the holidays it's a wonderful time to settle a pet into your family routine," Ms Lagoon said.
"But pets are for life and they should be a family decision, not just a surprise present under the tree this year.
"We have hundreds of animals in RSPCA care this time of year and many are up for adoption.
"If you can't offer a lifelong commitment to a pet right now, there are other ways you can support animals in need through foster, donating, volunteering and more."
