Alleged bank robber arrested after break-in, NSW

A man will face court today charged over the armed robbery of a Sydney bank in December last year, NSW Police say.

Just after 12pm on Thursday 22 December 2016, a man entered a financial institution on Ultimo Road, Ultimo, and approached a teller, displayed a firearm and threatened the staff member, demanding cash.

The staff member handed over a sum of cash before the man ran from the branch.

Police were contacted and conducted an extensive search of the area; however, the man was not located.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad established Strike Force Lille to investigate the robbery.

Following extensive inquiries, strike force detectives attempted to arrest a 28-year-old man on Wentworth Street, Glebe, about 11am yesterday.

The man ran from the officers, who gave chase into a nearby apartment block. A perimeter was established as police attempted to locate him.

About 12.30pm, the man was arrested on Bellevue Avenue, Glebe, after another short foot pursuit with officers attached to the Public Order and Riot Squad.

Shortly after the arrest, a woman contacted local police to report she had arrived home earlier to find a man had broken into her unit and was still inside.

Police were told the man stole some clothes, a wallet, and jewellery, before leaving the unit. Most of the items were later located in the building’s laundry.

The man was taken to Newtown Police Station and charged with armed robbery with a dangerous weapon and aggravated break, enter, and steal.

He has been refused bail to appear at Newtown Local Court today.

Investigations are continuing.

Police are urging anyone with information that may assist Strike Force Lille investigators to call Crime Stoppers.
